Surveillance evaluation

Laboratory audits

To ensure that all cases of disease under surveillance are being reported, audits of the reporting laboratories are performed annually for the previous 12 month period. During laboratory audits, the primary data source at every reporting site (usually a laboratory log book or laboratory information system report), is compared to the list of cases reported prospectively to the surveillance office. Case report forms are completed on all additional cases identified and isolates are collected when available.
